Named after Athena, the goddess of defensive strategy and wisdom, Athens was designed to exemplify the literary description of the city's patron goddess. Many of its structures were built to showcase the finest aesthetic designs and engineering techniques Greek greats could conjure, and perhaps, this explains why a great number of Athens' best landmarks are ancient ruins. Among these ruins include the magnificent Acropolis that sits comfortably in the heart of the city, the Parthenon, a gift to the gods, and Temple of Zeus, dedicated to the ancient Greek's most revered deity. Beyond ruins, there is an artistic world existing and thriving in Athens. Today, Athens is also home to fashion houses, jewelry designers, and galleries that showcase contemporary art.
