Ultimate Mykonos Guide by Neighborhood

May 03, 2020
Ahh, Mykonos! The white sandy beaches, the crystal clear waters, and the gorgeous sunsets each and every day. It's almost like a dream here. One that you probably would never want to wake up from. And who would? If you can live in a place that looks like a postcard, why not? If you can stay in a destination that's entirely cinematic, why not? And if you can enjoy life to the fullest, again, why not? Why not stay in Mykonos instead of just going here every now and then? If you're worried about which neighborhood to choose, these ones are the best of the bunch!

Agios Ioannis

Let's start with Agios Ioannis. It's no secret that Mykonos is quite the sight for sore eyes in of itself. It's such a beautiful island that you can't help but revel in its beauty even from afar. But even when you're on the island, it also offers stunning visuals too. Especially if you're staying at the beautiful western coast of Agios Ioannis. Situated practically at the tip of the island, this rea provides breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea as well as the nearby island of Delos. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the least crowded neighborhoods in all of Mykonos!

Ano Mera

What makes Mykonos such a fascinating destination is that it offers a glimpse of traditional Greek culture in the midst of a stunningly beautiful paradise of an island. The rest of Greece are mostly busy hubs with their own bustling metropolitans. But not in Mykonos. This island retains its traditional appeal while still maintaining its 'getaway destination' status. One neighborhood that stands testament to this is Ano Mera. As Greek as Greek Yoghurt itself, this quaint and quiet town seems as if it never entered the 21st-century. And that's actually part of its charm!

Chora

However, there are still towns in Mykonos that are also busy. Fille with fishermen yelling loudly to locals and tourists alike to buy their fresh produce that they just caught this morning. Lined with old-fashioned cafes and restaurants, mostly family-owned and retains a very intimate ambiance. Hordes of old ladies rushing from the church right after mass straight to the market to get their shopping done quickly. And local teenagers courting each other, getting their first taste of romantic love. This all may seem like a fictitious town straight out of a movie, but it also describes the beautiful neighborhood of Chora too.

Kalafatis

Ask yourself, why would you want to stay in Mykonos? If your answer is to live by the sea and enjoy its wonders day after day, then you should take at the relatively remote town of Kalafatis. Do you want to know just how secluded this area is? Very few buses travel to and from here. And even if you're lucky enough to get a ticket to go here, you'll probably have to wait hours until the next bus arrives that goes to this town. But when you arrive, you'll instantly know that it's worth it. Lined with exclusive resorts and practically nothing else, it's the perfect place to be one with the Mediterranean sea.

Little Venice

Imagine the Italian town of Venice was smaller, and, instead of canals, it was surrounded by the sparkling Mediterranean sea. If you think this is too much of an imaginary idea, think again! This is what Little Venice on the island of Mykonos looks and feels like. Beautiful Italian architecture, with their signature romantic balconies, overlooking the sea. It's so painfully romantic that one honeymoon isn't enough to spend here. You might just have to live here in order to stay in love! But in all seriousness, this quaint little Italian-esque town combines two beautiful cultures into one. What's not to love about that?

Old Port

Before even stepping foot on the island, you've probably seen countless images of Mykonos on TV or on the internet. You see the coastal towns, all charming ad pleasant, and thought that this is where you should be. Well, more often than not, the exact neighborhood that you were staring at was the Old Port. And in fact, this is the tourist hotspot in all of Mykonos. Lined with five-star hotels, exclusive spas, trendy stores, swanky bars, first-class restaurants, and more. It's the luxurious part of the island, probably the area where most of the world's elite frequent.

Ornos

Mykonos is a summer destination, yes, but what you might not hear a lot is that it's also a sports destination too. At least, for water sports, that is. If you're into snorkeling, scuba diving, jet-skiing, wind-surfing, and more, Mykonos actually provides all of that. Particularly in the beautiful area of Ornos. Water sports are a dime a dozen here, so you'll never get bored whether you're standing for two weeks or two years. Furthermore, the area is known to be one of the more family-friendly areas on the island. Nothing but golden sands, bright sunshine, and less of the rowdy parties that have since taken over Mykonos' reputation.

Platis Gialos

Finally, there's Platis Gialos. Situated just south of Ornos, there's practically one word that one can best attribute to this area: sunshine. If you're one to sunbathe all day, this is definitely your neighborhood. Heck, even if you're not spending time at the beach, chances are you'll still end up with a tan after a day of strolling outside. This is how bright and open the place is. There little to now big structures to block the sunlight. It's no wonder many people have set up their own vacation homes here.

Can you ever call a place like Mykonos your home? Yes! In fact, the island has many neighborhoods that can fit one's lifestyle while maintaining that luxurious reputation of a summer destination. They're worth looking into if you're planning to stay on the island for long!
