Ultimate San Sebastian Guide by Neighborhood

January 26, 2021
San Sebastian, also known as Donostia, is one of the most beautiful places in Spain. A coastal city within Basque country, it's one of those places that prove why Spain is the ultimate paradise for many people. It also helps that it's a healthy mix of history, natural beauty, a lively city atmosphere, and the charms of the Mediterranean. Think Cannes, Mykonos, St. Tropez, or Ibiza, but with a lot more tradition and culture! Of course, knowing about the city, particularly its many districts, will better convince you of just how incredible San Sebastian really is.

Amara

They say that if you really want to feel like a real Donostian, go to Amara. This lively neighborhood is a beautiful mix of traditional and contemporary life. Spanish architecture reigns supreme among the homes, all harkening back to the more opulent times in the country's history. Meanwhile, commercialized areas help entertain both locals and tourists alike, ranging from tapas bars and swanky restaurants to quirky boutiques and beautiful parks. Football fans will especially enjoy the huge stadium in the district, home to many great football matches. When there's a match going on, you'll likely see this place filled through the back end!

Antiguo

Now, if you really want to get into the history of San Sebastian, look no further than Antiguo! This is the oldest neighborhood in the city, as shown by the medieval-like vibe and the classic Spanish houses. It's here where you can get a good sense of the true culture of Basque Country, from how they lived to what they do now. Of course, history isn't the only thing worth seeing in this part of the city. The beautiful Ondaretta Beach is just a hop and a skip away! Clear white sands and a deep clue sea await those wanting to swim and tan to their hearts' content.

Centro

By its name alone, you probably can already tell what kind of place Centro is. Located right smack in the heart of the city, it's one of, if not the most important district in all of San Sebastian! Not to mention its most affluent. Upscale homes and luxury rentals are all on offer here, allowing for visitors and new residents alike to ensure they get to live the good life in San Sebastian. Its location makes it fairly near the other areas as well, so it's easy to get to them via public transport. And, of course, the nightlife here is truly amazing!

Egia

The Spanish are known as very artistic people! From the classics in Madrid to avant-garde street art in Barcelona, Spain has influenced the world of art in more ways than one. And wouldn't you believe it? Even San Sebastian is in on the fun! The beautiful Egia neighborhood is widely regarded as the city's artistic hub. Artists have set up their own studios and ateliers in this place. They've even installed some street art for the people's viewing pleasure. Galleries and museums help entertain both tourists and locals alike as well, showing a glimpse of Spain, the Donostians' excellence in the craft!

Gros

Funnily enough, Gros is far from a gross place at all! In fact, it particularly caters to a certain type of traveler: surfers! Yep! The stunning district of Gros is a surfer town through and through. It helps that Zurriola Beach is located here, one of the best beaches for surfing in Spain. The sport isn't exactly common in Europe to begin with. Surfing is more popular in places like the Caribbean, South America, Oceania, and Southeast Asia. So for a place in San Sebastian to focus heavily on surfing is pretty outstanding. And the sunshine here makes it as great a place for cycling as in Barcelona too!

La Concha

La Concha Beach is one of the most beautiful in Donostia. As a whole, San Sebastian has a lot of stunning shorelines, but La Concha is definitely one of the best! So much so that the district around it has become one of the must-visit areas in Basque Country. In essence. the peace and tranquility here are what will have you enjoying your stay. Sure, other parts of the city have their own beaches, but they're rarely as serene and relaxing as La Concha! That alone should convince you to visit and at least stay in this area for a while.

Parte Vieja

Also known as 'Old Town,' Parte Vieja rivals Antiguo as one of the most historic parts of San Sebastian. But while the latter is all about harkening back to those times, this place actually houses museums, monuments, and more! The San Telmo Museum museum, for instance, is basically a shrine dedicated to Basque Country's artistic greatness. Showcasing artworks from centuries-old relics to contemporary pieces, you can see for yourself how creativity has changed in Donostia. Add to that the other historic buildings that help highlight the beauty of Spain's culture and heritage.
